Alfa Romeo’s future may be bright indeed. Future cars will be inspired by their ‘halo’ model the 4C. MSN Cars spoke to Head of Alfa Romeo Europe, Louis-Carl Vignon and he confirmed that there will be more high-tech, efficient and performance-focused Alfa Romeo’s in the near future.
He also alluded to more variants of the £45,000 4C sports coupe, which could include an open top version and an even more powerful hardcore model. Mauro Pierallini, Head of Engineering for Alfa Romeo Europe said, “the 4C’s 1.75-litre turbo engine has the potential to make 300hp quite easily,” Which would make for an incredibly rapid bit of machinery, considering the already quick 0-62 mph time of 4.5 seconds.
Alfa Romeo plans to build 300,000 cars by 2017, which is a three fold increase from 2012, where they sold just over 101,000 units worldwide. Below is a look at how they are going to achieve their goal.
In conjunction with Mazda and set to be released in the UK in 2015, is the car that will sit below the 4C, rumored to be called the ‘Spider’. Based on the next generation Mazda MX-5 platform, the company will be able to return to offering a rear wheel drive roadster, just like the 1960’s Alfa Spider. It will use bespoke Alfa Romeo engines, probably a detuned version of the 4C’s 1.75 litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. Power output will probably be around 200 hp and debut Alfa’s new six-speed TCT (double clutch) gearbox.
Vignon speaks of the design, saying, “It will have Alfa’s traditional ‘scudetto’ shield grille and a very squat, taut stance, but will have it’s own distinct identity compared to the 4C. It will be more luxurious, too.”
It seems every manufacturer these days, offers or is going to offer a small SUV. Whether or not it has any off road capabilities seems to be of no consequence. Vignon says that the SUV will be the heart of the Alfa range and that the styling is more important than Nurburgring lap times or desert crossings. “Most SUV buyers don’t prioritise lightness and efficiency, they want a stylish car. We have to focus on design and sportiness; pushing the cabin backwards for a sleek look and a nice stylish interior.”
Two New Saloon Cars to Rival the German Establishment
Alfa Romeo needs a car to challenge the Audi A4/BMW 3 Series/Mercedes C Class and would be a logical successor to the 159. Thanks to parent company Fiat, a larger car aimed at the Audi A6/BMW 5 Series/Mercedes E class could be based on the Maserati Ghibli, utilizing their range of turbocharged V6 engines. A large luxury car is not needed as the Maserati Quattroporte has that market segment covered.
