Mahindra and Mahindra is one of the largest automobile manufacturers in India, started by two native entrepreneurs dating back to 1945. An engineer from Bombay, K.C. Mahindra, paired up with economist Ghulam Mohammed to kickstart the venture, with Mahindra’s brother later taking over Mohammed’s share.
Operating within the larger Mahindra group, M & M Automotive Division has an increasing international presence with vehicles currently on the roads of Europe, Latin America, Malaysia, India, South Korea, South Africa and Australia. Popular models such as the Scorpio and the Bolero are amongst a wide portfolio of personal and commercial vehicles. A key player in the Indian automotive industry, M &M’s competitors include Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki.
M & M also offer vehicle design and customization services as well as components and spares. The well-known brand supplies farm equipment too, covering all transportation needs at the design, manufacturing and service stage.
The company has been expanding and entering new markets in recent years, with the large acquisition of a South-Korean motor company, SsangYong, recently hitting the headlines for a number of reasons. SsangYong is undergoing a major rebranding programme under M&M’s new management, and the companies are already capitalizing on their new partnership as they are currently working together on a project to develop new petrol engines.
